Wrist Tendinitis

Wrist tendinitis is a common condition which occurs as a result of irritation and inflammation of the tendon around the wrist joints. There are many tendons which surround the wrist joint. Wrist tendinitis commonly affects one of the tendons, but it can also affect two or more tendons. Wrist tendinitis often occurs at the point where the tendons cross each other or pass above a bony prominence. These are possible areas of irritation and can cause discomfort when moving the wrist joint.

Joint tendonitis is common conditions that affect many people. The most common characteristic is irritation or inflammation of the tendon which surrounds the joint of the wrist. There are many tendons in this area that are connected to the fingers. Usually, tendonitis is caused in the area of the wrist where the tendons cross or even through the bony part of the wrist.

What are the Causes of Wrist Tendonitis?

When the tendons which are present in the wrists function well, they slide into the sheath line with synovial fluid to create a friction-free movement. An injury or tendon inflammation can lead to the thickness of the sheath, widen it and limit the fluidity of the movement.

The most common cause of this inflammation is usually a simple, recurring movement that exerts pressure on the tendon as time goes on.

In fact, wrists tendonitis is usually described as repetitive strain injury, this is because it is often caused by common daily activities such as:

• Playing sports
• Using a computer
• Writing
• Working physically

Although recurring daily movements are the major cause of wrist tendinitis, this condition can be caused by injuries and lifestyle habits. Some of the causes are listed below:

• Sudden injuries (falling on, hitting or bending the wrist)
• Poorly positioned joints or bones
• Poor wrist posture
• Srthritis
• Diabetes
• Age and/or flexibility

Care must be taken as not to mistake wrist tendinitis with arthritis of the wrist or carpal tunnel. One can contribute to the development of other but they are absolutely two different conditions:

• An inflammation of the joint is known as arthritis.
• The carpal tunnel is caused by compression of the nerve.
• While tendonitis is an inflammation of the tendon.

What are the Symptoms of Wrist Tendinitis?

The symptoms of wrist tendonitis can easily be identified; this is because pain and stiffness will be experienced in the wrist, most especially after you wake up early in the morning. The area will also be tender and painful when pressure is exerted on it. Mild swelling can also be visible. In addition, the inflamed tendon can produce a creaking sound when you move it.

The pain in wrist tendonitis is not particularly serious. It is often described as dull and passive pain rather than acute and intense pain.

Wrist tendonitis can reduce the range of movement in your hand, and when performing a routine exercise, weakness can occur, such as:

• Gripping
• Pinching
• Throwing
• Typing
• Using a computer mouse
• Using a computer game controller

Wrist Tendinitis Treatment

Treatment for Wrist Tendinitis requires restoring the circulation and blood flow to the affected structures in your wrist. Pain is caused when swelling, inflammation and decreased circulation generate a blockage, which causes blood flow to be interrupted or slowed. Treatment for this issue requires breaking up the accumulated fluids in your wrist to allow for improved healing and quicker recovery.
