Triceps Tendon Rupture

A triceps tendon rupture is an injury which affects the triceps tendon in the back of the elbow. Triceps tendon rupture occurs as a result of forced bending of the elbow during activities that involve pushing that can lead to the detachment of the triceps from the bone. A normal triceps tendon is attached firmly to the bone and it is responsible for elbow straightening (extension) strength. At the time when the triceps tendon ruptures, the tendon becomes detached and the muscle cannot pull on the bones, resulting in the difficulties and weakness of the elbow extension.

The triceps is the three-sectioned muscles which are located on the back of the upper arm. The triceps are connected to the arm bone by a tendon, the triceps muscles permit the complete extension of the elbow and straightening of the arm. When the tendon which connects the triceps and the bone becomes rupture, this can make the triceps to lose the ability to affect the bone. The weakness of the arm can occur as a result of triceps tendon rupture and prevent you from performing activities that require straightening the elbow.

What are the Causes of A Triceps Tendon Rupture?

Although Triceps Tendon Rupture is not common, triceps tendon fractures can result from the excessive use or trauma, such as a fall or injury that exerts strain on the tendon and causes tearing of the fibers.

Excessive weightlifting and sports such as boxing and gymnastics, which may require excessive use of the elbow, can cause triceps tendon ruptures. In addition, a person with certain conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, chronic kidney disease and lupus, and those using anabolic steroids may be exposed to a greater risk of developing triceps tendon ruptures.

What are the Symptoms of a Triceps Tendon Rupture?

Below are some of the symptoms that have been associated with a triceps tendon rupture:

• Elbow swelling.
• Pain or tenderness in the triceps muscle.
• There will be a pain when you try to straighten your elbow/ unable to straighten the arm fully.
• Arm weaknesses.
• A bulge or bump in the arm.
• There will be a popping sound or sensation in the elbow.

Triceps Tendon Rupture Treatment

Treatment for a Triceps Tendon Rupture requires restoring the circulation and blood flow to the affected structures in your arm. Pain is caused when swelling, inflammation and decreased circulation generate a blockage, which causes blood flow to be interrupted or slowed. Treatment for this issue requires breaking up the accumulated fluids in your arm to allow for improved healing and quicker recovery.
