Popliteal Cyst

A popliteal cyst is swollen of the fluid-filled sac which occurs as a result of lump at the back of the knee, this result in tightness and limited movement. The cyst can be painful when bending or widening your knee.

Usually, a popliteal cyst is a condition which occurs as a result of problems that affect the knee joint. Examples of these problems include arthritis or a cartilage injury. Treating a root cause can often lessen the problem. Although the popliteal cyst does not cause any permanent damage, it can be very disturbing and on rare occasion, it can rupture. The liquid can then move down the calf and cause "bruise" around the ankle.

What are the Causes of a Popliteal Cyst?

The knee consists of bone, tendons, and cartilage. There is a need for the tendons and cartilage to be lubricated, which they obtain from the synovial fluid. It provides for the smooth movement of the legs and in addition, it helps to reduce friction.

There are several pouches, which are referred to as the bursae, in each knee, through which synovial fluid circulates. Between the popliteal bursal a pouch located at the back of the knee - and the knee joint, there is a valve-like system which helps to regulate the flow of synovial fluid.

If the knee produces too many synovial fluids, it can result in accumulation of it in the popliteal bursa.

A Popliteal cyst can occur as a result of inflammation of the knee, usually because of the underlying condition such as:

1. Gout - The level of uric acid in the blood increases until the level becomes excessive (hyperuricemia), this leads to the accumulation of urate crystals around the joints. This results in inflammation and intense pain.

2. Hemophilia. This is an inherited disease in which the blood does not coagulate properly, this result in internal bleeding and joint damage.

3. Lupus. It is an autoimmune disease where the immune system of the body attacks healthy, normal tissues.

4. Osteoarthritis. This is a type of arthritis which occurs as a result of inflammation, breakdown and eventual loss of cartilage in the joints - the cartilage wears down as time goes on.

5. Psoriasis. A lot of individuals also experience pain and inflammation in their joints.

6. Reactive arthritis. This is another type of arthritis which is known to be chronic (long-term) arthritis with inflammation of the joints, inflammation of the eyes and inflammation of the genital, urinary or gastrointestinal system.

7. Rheumatoid arthritis. This is an inflammatory form of arthritis.

8. Septic arthritis. This is the inflammation of the joints caused by bacterial infection.

9. Injury. Injury or trauma to the knee, for example, cartilage tear, may lead to popliteal cyst; this is found to be common among athletes.

What are the Symptoms of a Popliteal Cyst?

Sometimes, a popliteal cyst does not cause any pain, and it can be difficult to observe it. In case there are visible symptoms, below are some common symptoms:

• There will be swelling behind the knee, and in some cases in the leg.
• Knee pain.
• Stiffness and inability to fully extend the knee.
The symptoms may be more serious after being active or standing for a long period of time.

Popliteal Cyst Treatment

Treatment for a Popliteal Cyst requires restoring the circulation and blood flow to the affected structures in your knee. Pain is caused when swelling, inflammation and decreased circulation generate a blockage, which causes blood flow to be interrupted or slowed. Treatment for this issue requires breaking up the accumulated fluids in your knee to allow for improved healing and quicker recovery.
