Joint Pain



Joints are widely known as the parts of the body where two or more bones meet. Joint is very important to the body as it permits the bone of the body skeleton to move conveniently. Some examples of joints are shoulders, hips, Knees, and elbow.

Joint pains mean an unpleasant, aches, and soreness which appears in any part of the body’s joints. It is a common complaint that affects every individual both male and female. Most cases of joint pain do not require a visit to the hospital. Sometimes joint pain occurs as a result of an illness or injury. However, the most common causes of joint pain are arthritis. But there are some other conditions that have been found to play a vital part in the occurrence of joint pain.

What are the Causes of Joint Pain?

As mentioned above, arthritis is one of the most common causes of joint pain. The two main types of arthritis that are responsible for joint pain are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

1. Osteoarthritis. In the United States, the most prevalent joint condition is osteoarthritis and it has been shown that it affects 27 million people. Osteoarthritis occurs as a result of the breakdown of cartilage thereby resulting in the bones to rub directly against each other and generating pain and swelling. Although osteoarthritis affects majorly elderly individuals it may occur in people of all ages. The risk of developing osteoarthritis is especially high in the event that you are overweight or you have used the joint excessively this can be due to playing a sport for many years. The most affected parts of the body are knees, hips, lower back and neck, fingers, the base of the thumb, and big toe.

2. Rheumatoid arthritis. This often affects the small joints of the hands and wrists on both sides of the body. Some individuals develop bumps, rheumatoid nodules - that appear underneath the skin. Just like psoriatic arthritis, debilitating pain and stiffness caused by inflammation usually occur in the morning or after taking some rest, however, the symptoms may last throughout the day. The joints can also be swollen or feel warm to the touch.

3. Lupus. Approximately 90% of individuals that have the autoimmune lupus disease have joint pain, and more than half of the patients said it was one of the first symptoms. In addition to pain, the joints can be swollen and feel stiff, tender and warm. The part of the body where the disease tends to affect includes knees, ankles, fingers, fingers, wrists, and elbows.

4. Gout. Gout is an extremely painful form of arthritis. In fact; the pain is so powerful that it can wake affected individual up in the middle of the night. It is extremely painful and weakening. Gout usually affects the big toe, and beyond this, it results in pain, the toe may also become swollen and hot to the touch. This type of arthritis is occurring as a result of the high level of uric acid in the blood.

• Limping
• Locking of the joint
• Stiffness
• Weakness
