Buttock Pain

Buttock pain can be disturbing and uncomfortable. In the event that an individual have this kind of discomfort sensation, finding the cause of the discomfort is advisable.

Although majority of the causes of buttock pain do not result in serious complications and may disappear by itself, in some cases, there may be a basic reason requiring treatment to relieve the symptoms.

Although many causes of buttock pain are not that serious but there are cases where the underlying condition may indicate medical attention and treatment is advisable.

Causes of Buttock Pain

Below are some of the conditions that can cause buttock pain:

1. Bruising. Bruising is one of the most common cause of pain in the buttocks. Blood from damaged vessels which flow under the skin is the major cause of the black and blue color of the bruise. You wonder how long will the bruises last? Color will tell you. You can have bruises if there is an injury in your buttocks. For example, if you get hit during contact sports such as soccer. You will often notice increased swelling and tenderness in the bruised area.

2. Muscle strain. This is another common cause of pain in the buttocks. The muscles in the buttocks are referred to as gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus. In the event that these muscles are overstretched or pulled by an individual, it can lead to pain.

3. Bursitis. There is bursa in between the bones. The bursa is a small fluid-filled sac that helps to guide and cushion the bones. However, the bursa can become inflamed which results in a condition known as bursitis. The parts of the body which is commonly affected by bursitis are knees, hips, shoulders and elbows. Nevertheless, bursitis can also occur in the buttocks when it is referred to as ischial bursitis.

4. Herniated disc. The disks in the spine of an individual can become herniated in the event that the outer layer of the disc tears, giving room for some of the inner material to slip out.

If a herniated disk is formed in the lumbar spine or lower back, pain can radiate to the buttocks and down the legs. Hernia discs are more likely to affect older people because the discs in the spine become weaker with age.

5. Degenerative disc disease

In elderly individuals, the discs located in the lower back may become weaker and worn down. As this occurs, the cushioning provided by the discs becomes less effective and the spinal bone can begin to rub against each other. This can lead to pain in the buttocks and thighs, as well as numbness and tingling in the legs. Symptoms may worsen when you sit, bend, or lift objects.

Symptoms of Buttock Pain

Most frequently, individuals with buttock pains describe acute tenderness in the buttocks and sciatica-like pain down the back of the thighs, calf, and foot. Below are some typical symptoms of buttock pain:

• A dull ache in the buttock.
• There will be pain down the back of the thigh, calf and foot (sciatica).
• Pain when walking upstairs or inclines,
• Pain will increase after prolonged sitting.
The symptoms of buttock pain frequently become worse after long-term sitting, walking or jogging, and can be improved after lying down on the back.

Buttock Pain Treatment

Treatment for Buttock Pain requires restoring the circulation and blood flow to the affected structures in your buttock. Pain is caused when swelling, inflammation and decreased circulation generate a blockage, which causes blood flow to be interrupted or slowed. Treatment for this issue requires breaking up the accumulated fluids in your buttock to allow for improved healing and quicker recovery.
