Trigger finger is a condition in which one of the fingers remains stuck in a bent position. The finger can be bent or straighten with a snap just like a trigger that is being pulled and released.
Trigger finger is also referred to as stenosing tenosynovitis. Trigger finger occurs when the space within the sheath which surrounds the tendon in the affected finger becomes narrow due to inflammation. In the event that the trigger finger is intense, the finger can be locked in a bent position.
Individuals whose job or hobbies require recurrent gripping actions are the categories of people that are at higher risk of developing trigger finger. It has also been revealed that trigger finger is prevalent in women and in all people with diabetes.
What are the Causes of Trigger Finger?
Tendons are tough fibrous cords which connect the muscle to the bones. There is a protective sheath which surrounds each of the tendons. Irritation and inflammation of the tendon sheath in the affected finger results in trigger finger. This disturbs the normal gliding motion of the tendon through the sheath.
Scarring occurs when the tendon sheath is irritated for a long period of time, thickening and also the formation of bumps (nodules) in the tendon, which further prevents the tendon's movements even more.
Risk Factors
Below are some factors that expose an individual to the development of trigger finger:
1. Repetitive gripping. Works and activities which require repetitive use of the hand and lengthy gripping can increase the risk of trigger finger.
2. Some health conditions. Individuals with diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis are more likely to develop a finger trigger.
3. Gender. It is more common in women than men.
4. Carpal tunnel syndrome surgery. Trigger finger may be a complication associated with carpal tunnel syndrome surgery, especially during the first six months after the operation.
Other health conditions that can cause trigger finger to include:
1. Diabetes. This is a permanent condition that increases the level of blood sugar.
2. Rheumatoid Arthritis. It is a long-term condition which occurs as a result of the malfunctioning of the immune system (natural body defense system), which causes pain and stiffness in the joints.
3. Gout. This is a type of arthritis where sodium urate crystals form inside and around the joints, causing inflammation (swelling).
4. Amyloidosis. This is the accumulation of an abnormal protein known as amyloid in the organs of the body such as the liver.
5. Underactive thyroid. This is a condition characterized by the inability of the body to produce a sufficient amount of a particular hormone.
6. Carpal tunnel syndrome. This is a condition affecting the joints of the wrist, which result in pain and tingling.
Other conditions are: Dupuytren's contracture and Quervain's disease among others .
What are the Symptoms of Trigger Finger?
Trigger finger can begin with discomfort which is experienced at the base of the finger or thumb, where the finger meets the palm. This area is often vulnerable to pressure. There, a lump could be felt. Below are some other symptoms of trigger finger:
• Pain.
• Popping.
• Catching feeling.
• Limited finger movement.
Trigger Finger Treatment
Treatment for Trigger Finger requires restoring the circulation and blood flow to the affected structures in your finger. Pain is caused when swelling, inflammation and decreased circulation generate a blockage, which causes blood flow to be interrupted or slowed. Treatment for this issue requires breaking up the accumulated fluids in your finger to allow for improved healing and quicker recovery.
